In 2019 Lemessa Mekonta started his new role as Country Director for IRC Ethiopia. Lemessa has been working with IRC as an associate since 2013, in that role he was involved in a range of projects in Ethiopia, among others he acted as the coordinator of the Self-supply project for the Millennium Water Alliance Ethiopia Program (MWA-EP). 

Lemessa lives in Addis Ababa and has previously worked within regional government (Oromia) on water issues. He is a veteran hydrogeologist with 20 years’ diversified and hands-on experiences on water resources, water supply, and sanitation. Among the most important areas of works he has been involved in are study and design on urban and rural water supply, feasibility studies of large, medium and small scale Irrigation projects including small holder irrigations, hydrogeological and groundwater resources mapping, water quality and ground water resources vulnerability mapping, water quality monitoring, water related environmental impact assessment (EIA), groundwater adaptation to climate change, supervision of water well drilling and construction, preparation of manuals and provision of trainings on rural water supply with emphasis on low cost technologies such as hand dug wells, rain water harvesting and spring development, provision of trainings on water well drilling and construction (deep wells), research on Self-supply / household investments, studies on Multiple Use water Services (MUS).
