Abstract | This discussion paper is part of an exercise of the UNDP/World Bank Water Supply and Sanitation Programme to document community management approaches and to refine models for community management through demonstration projects. The report is divided into two parts. The first part is a discussion of current community management practices in rural water supply projects. It is based on recent experiences, particularly from Francophone West Africa. The second part summarizes information obtained from seven successful projects in Burkina Faso, Mali and Togo. The focus is on management of handpump systems by water committees (community mobilization), extension services, maintenance, and spare parts distribution. |
