Abstract | After a gastroenteritis outbreak, a study concluded that there were possible health risks involved in the use of well water in Katsina town, Nigeria. Well water was sampled by the most probable number (MPN) method and all cases showed high coliform counts. Faecal coliforms and non-cholera vibrio were detected in all samples. There was no significant relationship between the coliform counts and the distances of pit latrines to wells, water table to ground level, slope relationship between wells and latrines, the pH of water and whether the wells were left permanently open or not. Other faecal bacteria and enterobacteriaceae were isolated in 5-40% of the samples. Only 2 of the sampled households exposed to well-water had pipeborne water in addition. |
