Abstract | The Benin Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project was a joint effort of USAID, the government of the Republic of Benin, UNICEF and the Peace Corps. This project provided 309 wells equipped with handpumps, and 370 latrines, 109 of which at primary schools. In addition, 500 village health committees were created and the annual incidence rate of guinea worm infection was reduced by over 30 percent. An evaluation of the project by USAID in September 1991, showed that the project had met all of its targets, surpassing expectations in some areas. Individual assessments were performed for such topics as the socio-health component, cistern, latrine, borehole and headquarters construction, epidemiological surveillance, administration and maintenance. One of the problems encountered was the unwillingness of the villagers to replenish the handpump maintenance fund. Suggestions for further activities are included in the report, most of which recommend continuation of present policies and practices. |
