Abstract

This annual report covers the activities of the NGO Forum for Drinking Water Supply & Sanitation in 2002 in Bangladesh. This organization has made efforts to contribute in the improvement of public health by reducing mortality and morbidity caused by water-related diseases. In doing so it has utilized hardware, software and inter-agency & trans-sectoral collaboration. NGO forum materializes its integrated WatSan programme in association with its partners countrywide. While providing its Water and Sanitation services to the grassroots people, NGO forum has given special emphasis on identification of and providing services to the poor and disadvantaged people of those areas that are not served or served only sparingly with regard to safe water and sanitation facilities. This report outlines that safe drinking water, hygienic sanitation practices and maintenance of personal and family hygiene are basic elements for ensuring sound health. NGO forum has been promoting these basic facilities through both software and hardware services. Software services are advocacy and information services, training, communication, promotional activities, mitigation of arsenic and the implementation of a resource centre. Hardware support as outlined in this report can be understood as utilities implemented in the community to provide that community with a safe water supply and sanitation that ensure good hygiene. In order to support and maintain the above mentioned activities and facilities NGO provides the communities involved with research, monitoring and evaluation practices. Human resources is an important part of the NGO forum organization and accounts for its success.
