Abstract

An experiment where female construction workers are trained to be masons. In this way the women can take on the responsibility for the sanitation facilities themselves. During the training they learn to make circular and square soak pit latrines. By building public latrines they learnt skills such as tiling, plumbing and plastering. The outcome is that these women are able to encourage better sanitary conditions and improved living standards.
