Abstract | A triiodide polymeric membrane based on a blend of polystyrene and polyethylene was evaluated for disinfection of water. Studies on anitibacterial activity of the iodised membrane were carried out under both static and dynamic conditions. The membrane was able to inactivate E. coli (NCTC 10148) in experimentally contaminated water. The long-term activity of the iodised membrane was carried out by passing 10,000 litres of water through a packed column of the membrane and it was observed that there was no signiificant loss of effectiveness. The release of iodine at the p.p.m. level did not exceed the experimental determined oral and intravenous doses of iodine from the membrane and was sustained for a long period of time as measured by an ion selective electrode. |
