Abstract | An introductory review is provided of methods for the control and use of aquatic weeds, especially in developing countries. Growth characteristics, chemical composition and the type and extent of the problems caused by aquatic weeds are described. The harvesting of aquatic weeds is dealt with, as well as their uses as fertilizers, paper, energy production (biogas, alcohol) and as feed for fish, livestock and other animals. Wastewater treatment using aquatic weeds is examined, including wastewater contaminant removal. Guidelines for the design of an aquatic treatment system together with data from existing systems are presented. Such treatment techniques may, however, involve health hazards from pathogens, heavy metals, and toxic substances that are absorbed into the plant tissues. |
