“The good people of Asutifi North District have embraced this programme and are wholeheartedly committed to its full implementation and sustainability to improve the quality of life for all people in the district.”
Honorable Anthony Mensah, District Chief Executive of Asutifi North District Assembly
“The nearest water to us is a stream. We used it for everything. The water from the stream turned every food we cooked, like cassava and palm nut soup, dark. But we used it anyway because we didn’t have any safe and clean water close to us. Thankfully, we now celebrate the flow of safe and clean water in Kokofu Awonsu.”
Emelia Agyewaa, Farmer, Kokofu Awonsu community
"I am very impressed with how intensive community sensitisation and engagement through the ANAM WASH radio programme has empowered communities to know that water is their right."
Suglo Ibrahim, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, World Vision Ghana
This year Asutifi North received a special award for WASH (at the District League Table) and this was given to them by the King of Ashanti. ... Tears came into my eyes because I could turn my eyes back to 2017 and see what was happening there. And in 2023-2024 this has been acknowledged.Dr. Kodjo Esseim Mensah-Abrampa, Director General of the National Development Planning Commission, Ghana
There is powerful political leadership. The Government of Ghana recognises systems strengthening as the pre-condition to sustainable WASH service delivery. Systems thinking is incorporated in the national development agenda, the national development policy framework, WASH sector policies, and is being applied to the reform rural water supply.
Processes to track sector progress are weak. Regulation of rural water, sanitation and hygiene services remains a challenge. And so is the capacity to mobilise resources. Addressing these gaps requires robust partnership management and utilizing data to make informed decisions.
IRC in Ghana is valued by the national government and local authorities. IRC's district-based support to its partner district Asutifi North is assisting in the implementation of the District WASH master plan and is serving as a model for the national government to be replicated in other districts.
