Abstract

This report of the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) reviews progress on the levels of water supply and sanitation service coverage in 84 developing countries. It is the third review published since the start of the JMP in 1990. The figures relate mainly to the years 1993 and 1994. The report provides data on water and sanitation coverage (both urban and rural) at the global and regional levels. Regional coverage data is given for Africa (38 countries), Asia & Pacific (23 countries), West Asia (5 countries), and Latin America & Caribbean (18 countries). Examples are also included of specific monitoring activities in 14 countries. The report analyses the coverage perspectives to the years 2000 and 2020 at the global and regional levels. If the 1990-1994 trends remain unchanged, by the year 2000 some 755 million people will remain without safe drinking water supply and 3.3 billion people will be without appropriate sanitation. In conclusion, the report discusses the use of household surveys and geographic information systems (GIS) as monitoring tools.
