Abstract

The Water Resource Series is published regularly by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). ESCAP includes both developed and developing countries. Part One of this document contains criteria for water quality with tabulated information on irrigation water, and sampling and monitoring procedures. Part Two is a report of the Seminar on Water Quality Monitoring organized by ESCAP in September 1989 in the People's Republic of China. Detailed information from each ESCAP country is given, including reports from water quality monitoring activities per region, water quality parameters and monitoring frequency, urban, rural and coastal differences in quality, soils information, land use and plans for the next decade. Health programs, federal legislation and training procedures are also included in some of the country profiles. Technical and scientific papers presented at the seminar, both from international organizations and the host country, are included. Most deal with water quality monitoring in specific regions of one land, but the GEMS/WATER (Global Environmental Monitoring System) program is also presented and discussed in relation to its effectiveness in ESCAP countries.
