Abstract

Monitoring water quality in developing countries, in view of the continually revised environmental aspects of development projects as well as the wide variety of water quality problems, can be a difficult assignment for most hydrologists. These guidelines were developed by UNESCO, WHO and UNEP personnel in an attempt to simplify and standardize the large variety of sampling programmes, data management and field operations. Surface water considerations are split into two areas; rivers, and lakes and reservoirs. Groundwater is dealt with as a separate water issue. Sampling programmes are presented in context with their goals; e.g.international assessment, basic surveys, emergency surveys, trend monitoring and others, have different goals, and require different monitoring procedures and data management techniques. The selection of water quality variables, including particulate matter, biological material, organic pollutants, etc., influence the type of monitoring programme selected. Statistics, specific graphic techniques for water quality data, and mathematical water quality models are discussed at length. Although the case studies presented are primarily from Europe and the United States, the principles presented in the problem-solving aspect are valid for developing countries. The second edition includes a new chapter on reservoirs.
