Abstract

This handbook addresses specific aspects of water resources management and water pollution control. It includes a series of case studies from various regions to highlight successful models of wastewater management and pollution control. These include: India (Ganga), China (Shanghai Huanpu River), Philippines (Pasig River), Nigeria, South Africa (Witbank catchment), Brazil (Upper Tiete Basin), Mexico (Mezquital Valley and Lerma-Chapal Basin), Danube Basin, Russia (Moscow), Cyprus, Jordan, and Yemen (Sana'a). Issues covered in the book include: a. identification, categorization and prioritization of local water quality and pollution control problems; b. development and implementation of policy, planning and coordination schemes, preparation and/or adaptation of legislation, monitoring programmes, enforcement activities, training and information dissemination; c. management tools and instruments such as regulation, water quality standards, monitoring systems, water quality modelling tools and impact assessments; and d. long-term strategies for water pollution control based upon realistic short-term goals. The book is aimed at policy makers and environmental managers in water authorities and engineering companies engaged in water quality programmes, particularly in developing countries. It can also be used as a textbook or as training material for water quality management courses.
