Abstract

This paper describes twenty small private providers: from community-based businesses, to NGOs, to commercial entrepreneurs, working in the water supply and sanitation sector in Africa, Latin America, Caribbean and Asia. The main characteristics of small providers (individual initiative, flexibility, adaptability to the market in terms of financial arrangements, technical options and outreach are described. The document has two parts, Part I : profiles and Part II : typology. The author suggests that small scale entrepreneurs' activity should be supported, insofar as it proves an efficient way to scale up water and sanitation service levels and quality.
