Abstract

This WASH social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) participants' manual, developed by the USAID Transform WASH project, is a comprehensive guide designed to enhance the demand for low-cost, high-quality WASH products and services. It employs two distinct approaches: commercial marketing and community-based interventions. The manual focuses on building the capacity of health extension workers, who are key frontline actors in improving WASH behaviors and creating demand for improved WASH products and services. The manual is structured into four major units, covering SBCC, WASH concepts and key messages, practical WASH household counseling visits, and monitoring and evaluation activities. It aims to equip health professionals with the knowledge and skills to apply SBCC principles in changing community behaviors related to sanitation, hygiene, and water safety. The manual also includes practical exercises and introduces standard data collection and reporting formats. Ultimately, it serves as a valuable resource for health professionals working with communities to improve WASH outcomes
