Full Text | Arati Rani Das works in Sahapur Bazaar as a cleaner and general assistant. Before the latrine was built Arati would defecate in the open or visit a nearby house of a friend if she had time. Unlike the men who hid behind coconut trees visible from the market, Arati would use the ditch behind the fish market buildings. Her children accompany her at work, and her husband Kokhon Das drives a bicycle van for hire in the market. Asked what she likes most about the latrine - privacy, cleanliness, convenience, functionality - she says "everything" |
