Abstract

A baseline study was conducted in Biratnagar Municipality, Nepal, in June 1990 to determine the basic health needs, domestic water use patterns, sanitation situation and other requirements for the Urban Basic Services Program (UBS). The UBS is targeted for the growing number of urban poor in five major regions; Lalitpur, Biratnagar, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Dhangadi. Three "pocket" areas were chosen to be representative for the study. Drinking water was provided mainly by tubewells, but the surrounding area was not properly drained. The lack of latrines was a major health hazard in all three areas. Most parents did not see education as important for their children. Most households had animals in their living areas, and more manure was used for cooking fuel than for fertilizer. The report contains sample questionnaires for both men and women, as well as statistical analyses on the results.
