Abstract

The potential of bamboo as reinforcement in ferrocement skeletal grids was investigated. The strength properties of bamboo, particulary of Asian species, are discussed. Swelling and shrinkage occur in bamboo due to absorption/release of water. Tests were therefore carried out using several water repellant treatment methods of which the application of hot bitumen gave the best results. To simulate exposure to an acidic environment, the effect of sulphuric acid on bamboo was also tested. Results showed that rapid deteriotation in bamboo strength occured as the acid concentration increased from 0.1 to 5%. Finally the optimum percentage of bamboo reinforcement for various applications is discussed.
