Abstract

Fifty two sector professionals mainly from East Asia discussed and shared approaches to achieve sustainable and equitable water and sanitation service for the poor. Consensus evolved that equity and sustainability are mutually influencing factors, that equity is a part of sustainability, and that we know more about measuring sustainability than we know about measuring equity. Group conclusions were drawn on each key component of sustainability, i.e.social, technical, financial, environmental and institutional, and
the participants identified how equity could be built into it. The results were presented in tables representing a set of
concrete, practical ideas and actions that are possible at policy, institution, and community level, to enhance sustainability with equity.
