Abstract

This publication describes how low-income communities can themselves construct a simple low-cost drainage system or rehabilitate an existing system that has fallen into disrepair. Practical guidance is given on the design and construction of drainage channels, and on ways of coping with steep slopes, low-lying flat terrains and other problem areas. A checklist is provided which shows communities how they can plan a drainage scheme with little or no outside assistance. Causes of drainage failure are discussed, followed by ways to rehabilitate and maintain existing systems. A separate chapter is devoted to community participation in the planning, construction and maintenance of drainage schemes through the establishment of a drainage committee. Among the annexes are: a glossary, design calculations, and elements to be included in the terms of reference for consultants.
