Abstract

This book describes the history of Dutch river policy from the late eighteenth century to the present. It focuses on the events and developments that led to the rise and fall of the quest for the perfect, normal river. Standardization efforts, which focused on the transformation of the unpredictable, "abnormal" rivers in predictable, 'normal' waterways, was more than a century (1850-1965) the undisputed paradigm of river policy.
