Abstract | Report based on the Central American Handwashing Initiative aimed to reduce morbidity and mortality among children under five through a coordinated communication campaign promoting proper handwashing with soap to prevent diarrheal disease. In this initiative private commercial firms (soap producers) and public entities (Mainly Ministries of Health) worked in partnership to achieve complementary goals in promoting handwashing for public health. This report is part of the assessment and dissemination activities that began with a follow-up market survey to monitor the effects of the campaign and continued with presentations to many organizations to share the results and lessons learned. The report provides details about the experience in Central America for project managers to understand what might be involved in carrying out such an effort. |
