This booklet contains step-by-step guidelines for the implementation of household sanitary latrines, community latrines / shared latrines and public toilets. Guidelines for the provision of household sanitary latrines include steps to identify the target group; to promote sanitary facilities to low income groups to create a demand; to distribute latrines; to follow-up on their installation, use and maintenance; and to initiate research and development. Though not recommended for phase II of the project due to technical difficulties, possible guidelines for implementation of community latrines / shared latrines are outlined including such steps as the identification of the target group; site selection and contribution money; construction, operation and maintenance; the agreement between the WATSAN committee and users; and follow-up and research and development. In dealing with the installation of public toilets, the booklet contains step-by-step planning for both the rehabilitation of existing public toilets and the siting of new public toilets. It is hoped that these guidelines will be tested during implementatiion and be modified according to local demand and situation.
