Abstract

The case studies in this book aim to describe activities relating to source separation in Brazil, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Argentina and the Netherlands. Chapter 1 provides an overview of recent trends and approaches in solid waste management relevant to separation at source. Chapter 2 focuses in more detail on separation at source. It sets the stage for the case studies. Chapters 3 to 8 provide a brief review of the separation at source cases in the countries mentioned above. A general overview of the solid waste management context is provided for each country, with a description of the organizational aspects of urban waste management services. Issue covered include the logistics of separation and collection, recycling, composting, costs and financing, involvement of stakeholders, interface between customary and collectively organized systems, and conclusions. The last chapter of the book presents the conclusions and recommendations.
