The location of the original latrine site

The original site selected and approved by HYSAWA was immediately behind the Business Association chambers however, the landowner later refused use of the site so it was shifted back approximately 20m and near to the edge of an aquaculture pond. This raised a concern of water contamination from the soak pit septic tank system and other technical issues, as the soil quality of the new site was poor, and the block foundations would be subject to water lapping at the base and soil erosion. The contamination risk was assessed as low as the septic tank is contained and the soak pit is located away from the water, furthermore the UP Management plan to fill in the pond and extend the cattle market in the near future. For construction to occur on the new site modifications to the original design were required, namely a column beam platform structure, a raised plinth for the chambers and raised walkway to the female chamber to improve access form the main road. The team agreed the latrine was necessary and the extra measures were worth the investment, so Union Parishad, BMC and BA members pooled together almost 60,000 Taka of their own funds to ensure quality construction.
