Abstract

Of the various methods tried, the provision of safe water supply is the most effective means of controlling guinea worm in the long run. However, the provision of sanitary wells is expensive, with the major costs being the digging and lining of wells. This article describes a project which provided shallow wells lined with used oil drums. The drums are easily available, and they protect the wells so that cyclops free water can be obtained in the communities at almost the same sites as the infested ponds.
