Abstract

Thematic Overview Paper (TOP) providing easy access to the main principles of sanitation and hygiene education at the school level based on worldwide experiences and views of leading practitioners. It gives insight in a number of elements that the reader should keep in mind for a school sanitation and hygiene education (SSHE) project. It describes some basic facts and challenges about SSHE; some initiatives; the implications of SSHE across the range of levels from policy-making to field activity; steps that can be taken to improve SSHE at the macro and micro level; and lessons learned and issues which stakeholders should take into consideration. The paper also provides a list of key books, articles and manuals (annotated) and references, websites, and contacts, and includes case studies.
