Abstract

Presented in this report are the experiences gained while evaluating the technical aspects of an international non-governmental organization project to supply domestic water and sanitation in Mirpur slum, Dhaka. The article describes the sanitation project which included the provision of pit latrines, Tara hand pumps, and containers for solid waste as well as intensive training in their use and maintenance. The results of questionnaires used to evaluate the project reveal much ineffective use and maintenance of sanitation facilities and an overall lack of adequate fundamental environmental health knowledge. The paper emphasizes the need for appropriate planning, concentration on operation and maintenance, more understandable hygiene education and effective monitoring in such projects.
