Abstract

The effectiveness of jute fibre as a roughing filter medium for a series filtration system and as an upper layer medium of a dual-media filter was investigated with a pilot-scale filter unit fed with raw water and articially turbid water. Jute fibre was found to be a usable medium for removal of gross suspended solids from high turbidity waters, producing an effluent acceptable for subsequent refined treatment. Experiments using washed (recycled) jute fibre as a prefilter medium indicated the performance of such fibre was similar to that of fresh jute fibre. Discontinuous operation of a jute fibre filter revealed effluent of an objectionable anaerobic condition and might impose some difficulties for subsequent treatment. This undesirable condition was eliminated by operating the filter continuously during day time and slowing it down at night.
