Abstract

This book offers the ISWM assessment methodology as a way of understanding the existing waste management system in a city or town. The collection of approaches, techniques, methods and experiences that make up this document are collectively referred to as ISWM assessment. The document offers the practitioner, public official or activist clear information on: The steps needed to complete an ISWM assessment; Techniques, tools and instruments that can be applied; The roles of different stakeholders; The context and conditions for a successful ISWM assessment; Outputs and deliverables; and Costs involved

The book explains how to carry out an ISWM assessment and illustrates this with examples from the experiences from UWEP Plus programme. The main goal of this programme was to stimulate planning and improvement in SWM in several cities worldwide. Putting ISWM into Practice is designed for anyone responsible for assessing and planning for SWM improvements in cities, towns or urban areas.
