Abstract

This article discusses the attempts to improve the quality of water in the River Ganga in the context of the Ganga Action Plan (GAP) which was launched in 1986. The situation in urban centres such as Hardwar, Kanpur, Patna and Calcutta are discussed as well as the criticism of the project and the doubts concerning the project's chances of long-term success. It remains to be seen whether GAP will prove to be a model for cleaning up other rivers in India.
