Abstract

Following a review of existing latrine pit emptying devices (conventional vacuum tanker trucks, BREVAC vacuum tanker truck, MICRAVAC latrine emptying vehicle, and MAPET manual latrine emptying system) the author proposes an alternative system which consists of a vacuum tanker trailer, a tug/vacuum pump (1500 litres/minute) and a transfer vehicle. The tug/vacuum pump comprises a simple petrol driven vacuum pump mounted on two used car wheels with a handle to enable it to be wheeled around by hand. Draft specifications are provided.
