Abstract

The main objective of the seminar was to promote the participation of women in all areas of water supply programmes, so as to improve the effectiveness, reliability and quality of water supply. The seminar recognized that the participation of local communities and women is not only fundamental but has to be pursued at a time of economic and financial crisis which is forcing most African countries to adopt a policy of gradual disengagement on the part of the state. The participants (80 people from 20 French speaking countries in Africa and other parts of the world) identified general problems on the conceptual, quantitative, technological and participation level and made their recommendations. A summary of the many presentations is given, drawing attention to the lessons learned from the various approaches developed in the course of the decade.
