Abstract

The Project Nutrition, Health Education and Environmental Sanitation (NHEES) was begun in 1975 in five States in India, and has been expanded in 1981-1989 to a total of fifteen States. The project was designed to increase awareness of nutrition, health education and environmental sanitation in school-age children. A curricular package and methodology was developed, supplemented by the institution of a Primary Health Care Center contact programme for all community members. Pupils were regularly tested by the Pupil Achievement Test (PAT) to monitor progress. The report contains all statistical analyses of the results of the PAT and the Community Contact Program (CCP) by sex, state, and class for each of the sections of the questionnaires. The results of the PATs do not show many significant trends between project and non-project schools in some circumstances, although the results of the CCP showed a positive effect. The appendices contain sample PATs, sample CCP questionnaires, lists of the educational materials eveloped, and a sample master tabulation sheet.
