Abstract

The first Kenya National Workshop on Rainwater Harvesting was held at Nakuru in May 1991, sponsored by UNICEF and the Diocese of Nakuru. Eight technical papers were presented, seven concerning different aspects of rainwater harvesting, and one over organic farming. Several methods of rainwater harvesting are presented, including roof harvesting, terrace harvesting, dam and dug wells harvesting and ground and rock catchments. Storage tanks and reservoirs and gravity piping systems are also discussed. Some of the papers include community participation efforts made by the developing agency, and problems encountered by the system constrution. A field trip to the Pwani Community Rainwater Catchment Project was made. Recommendations concerning design, livestock and crop production, water quality, health, social, economic and community aspects are given in the last chapter.
