Abstract | This manual aims to: 1) raise awaireness and understanding of the health impact on children of the physical environment of primary schools; 2) increase the priority given to developing primary school environments that promote health; 3) define areas where interventions are feasible and to suggest what can be done and how, particularly under difficult conditions and with severe budgetary constraints. The book is divided in 4 chapters: Chapter 1 presents an overview of the current situation.; Chapter 2 lists the health aspects of the school environment; Chapter 3 gives the objectives for a healthy school environment; and Chapter 4 contains recommendations. Annexes contain technology options; guidelines to carry out an audit and action plan; and seven case studies from India (Madras and Rajasthan), Colombia, Kenya, Viet Nam, Pakistan, and Bolivia, illustrating some of the low-cost techniques which can be employed to improve health in schools. |
