Abstract

The aim of this document is to stimulate discussion among water policy- makers and water managers in developing countries, as well as water officials in development cooperation agencies, about the options for water pricing to contribute more substantively to the sustainable financing of water resource management functions.

The document is structured in four sections: (i) introduction, (ii) water pricing as part of water policy and financing, (iii) water pricing mechanisms, and (iv) key issues around water pricing. The document illustrates water pricing options with examples from OECD countries  (where pricing mechanisms have been implemented more extensively) and to the extent possible from developing countries from the EUWI focus regions. The paper concludes with a call for more study and debate on pricing for WRM. [author abstract]
