Abstract | Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad were chosen as representative major cities of the country of Pakistan for this detailed study over the Prestressed Reinforced Concrete Pipes (PRCC) presently in use in water supply and sanitation systems. It is estimated that between 30 and 50% of the water is lost between the source and the consumer. The PRCC pipes are manufactured in Pakistan, but are quite variable in quality. They are substantially cheaper than other alternatives, such as iron, pvc or mild steel. It was found that two of the cities have discontinued purchasing the PRCC pipes for new systems, but the existing systems must still be repaired and maintained. PRCC pipes cannot be repaired under flow conditions, so the supply must be cut off before reparations can be made, causing frequent interruption of service. Workshops for training personnel from water agencies to evaluate pipe conditions, review current practices and learn to identify sources of water loss are among the suggestions in the Plan of Action. |
