Abstract

The Indian Institute of Technology has designed a multipurpose phtovoltaic water pump testing system. The testing system was used to carry out a comparative study of two different pump sets: a series DC motor-pump manufactured in India by Central Electronics Ltd. (CEL) and a brushless DC motor-pump, the KSB AQUSAL 50M from Germany. Although the efficiency of the CEL subsystem was lower, the projected specific capital cost (SCC) and solar insulation was comparable to that of the KSB model. Moreover the CEL subsystem efficiency was less affected by a change of water head. The locally available CEL pump was therefore considered a better choice under Indian conditions.
