Abstract

The approach described in this guide builds on the methodology and tools developed by Lyra Srinivasan and her colleagues (Tools for community participation). In part I of the guide an introduction to PHAST (Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation) is given by explaining the purpose of the guide and how to use it and by providing some necessary background concepts. Part I end with some important points for the facilitator guiding a community through the process of change. Part II of the guide takes the facilitator through seven steps and a total of 17 activities to carry out these steps. The steps are as follows: Problem identification, Problem analysis, Planning for solutions, Selecting options, Planning for new facilities and behaviour change, Planning for monitoring and evaluation, Participatory evaluation. In Part II guidelines are given for the development of a PHAST toolkit, which is adapted to the cultural situation a facilitator will be working. The main underlying assumption of the approach is that a participatory approach to the prevention of diarrhoeal disease is not only more enjoyable, but has better and more sustainable results than a more conventional approach.
