Abstract

The Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) Notes is a continuing series of collated recent articles on rural development, written by practitioners worldwide in the field. This volume covers the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) Trainers Workshop in Bangalore, India. Section A discusses methods used in India to stimulate villagers' participation in discussions, interviewing procedures, and innovative approaches to explain concepts to analphabetic people in an non-authoritarian manner. These included "participatory mapping" by the community using sticks, stones, leaves and/or other available materials for delineation of watersheds, land use, drainage patterns and other thematic maps. Section B consists of 13 case studies in the promotion of community participation in rural and natural resource development projects. The concepts outlined in Section A were shown to be quite effective in the elucidation of problems and constraints, and the development of solutions.
