Abstract

This short paper highlights the major aspects of the participatory methods, as experimented by the PSU Foundation over the last few years. The paper seeks to address the key features of the techniques that have emerged. The approach used by PSU includes the active participation of local communities through the development of grassroots institutions in order to develop a local resource base which can sustain the impact of interventions beyond the project period. The paper considers the role of local performing art forms in helping to get programme messages across to the local communities. There are various appendices including a short abstract on effective communication in Karnataka; a note from Chistine van Wijk on folk art (see also isn 12593); another short (four-page) note on Karnataka; and one page on experiences in the village of Bairagrh, Lakhimpur-Kheri (District) in Uttar Pradesh.
