Abstract | In 1984 the Nicaraguan Institute for Water Supply and Sewerage (INAA), the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (MINASA), and the London-based Catholic Institute for International Relations (CIIR) devised a pilot project in which routine monitoring of rural water supplies would be established in the province of Boaco. This booklet describes the history and activities of the Boaco project, which now serves as the basis for a national water quality monitoring programme. The first programme activity, a survey of existing systems originally constructed with World Bank support, revealed overall poor maintenance and widespread bacteriological contamination of the water. Following the survey, village water committees were re-established, and workshops were held to train the communities to operate and maintain their own systems: hand-dug wells, boreholes or spring-fed supplies. Health education workshops gained wide audiences especially when video programmes were introduced. |
