Abstract | This document presents the proceedings of a national workshop on "Safe Drinking Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation" held in Nepal in June, 1995, and organized by the Government of Nepal in cooperation with UNICEF Nepal. The workshop's purpose was to develop a coordinating mechanism among agencies involved to promote a coordinated approach to the water and environmental sanitation (WES) sector, specifically to share information and skills and to develop procedures for community improvement and ownership for sustainability. The workshop agenda consisted of five Agendum; namely, (1) present policies and strategies in the water supply and sanitation sector, (2) envisaged role of DWSS (Department of Water Supply and Sewage) and participation of partners, (3) role, place, coordination and responsibilities of NGOs/INGOs with DWSS, (4) setting-up of a regular coordination/information sharing mechanism at district, regional and central levels, and (5) users' committee empowerment and ownership. As well as including the key-note speeches presented on each agendum, the main issues and recommendations arising from the discussion of each is presented in summary. Overall recommendations concentrated on the necessity of DWSS to facilitate the implementation of Nepal's Eighth Plan (1992-1997) to bring safe drinking water to 72% of the population by 1997 and to provide a basic knowledge of hygiene, environmental sanitation and conservation to the maximum number of people. |
