Abstract

A systematic introduction is given to mathematical optimization models for the design of water distribution and sewage systems. The first part of the book deals with fundamentals of design models, with a brief review of hydraulic and economic aspects. Some interdependencies between these fundamentals and design models are discussed together with some practical applications. Fundamentals of operations research are also discussed. The second part of the book deals with individual design models which are easy to implement, are flexible, and enhance the understanding of the way design models should be applied. The first model presented, concerning a trunk sewer system, and requiring neither a computer programme nor a background in optimization techniques, is extended in a following chapter to the design of wastewater collection systems. The wastewater management problem in the next chapter results in a very complex optimization problem for which no standard solution is available. This investigation shows that the characteristics of a particular problem may be used to develop an individual solution approach. The last chapter, on water distribution systems, begins with a basic model which is extended step by step to serve a variety of practical problem variations.
