Abstract

The Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission (RGNDWM), Department of Drinking Water Supply, Ministry of Rural Development, GOI commissioned AFC to conduct the mid-term evaluation of Total Sanitation Campaign in 20 districts of 14 states viz; Andhara Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Tripura, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. This report is based mainly on primary data collected on individual household toilets, hygiene and sanitation education in schools, Anganwadi centers, community sanitary complexes etc. from twenty districts of the States. Data and information from secondary sources viz. different stake holders in the implementation of TSC in the states were also collected through a series of discussions with concerned officials. Discussions were also held with the stakeholders at village, block, district and state levels. The impact of IEC activities have been gauged indirectly from the inputs received from adopting as well as non-adopting village households, focus group discussions and interaction with functionaries at different levels.
