Abstract

This book is a catalogue of 50 innovative experiments in participatory communication for the poor in developing countries. In the introduction, the author discusses the role of participatory communication in development and then reviews the experiences with the main types of media mentioned in the case stories: community radio, video, theatre and Internet (including telecentres and Internet radio). Each case study includes a description, background and context, aspects of social change, media and methods used, constraints and a list of references. The following case studies included experiences with water and/or sanitation: Programa de Desarrollo Rural Integrado del Trópico Húmedo (PRODERITH) (Mexico); Aarohan Street Theatre (Nepal); Community Audio Towers (Philippines); La Voz de la Comunidad (Guatemala); Network of Educational Theatre (NET) (Nigeria); Radio Chaguarurco (Ecuador); Radio Kwizera (Tanzania); Moutse Community Radio Station (MCRS) (South Africa); Kiritimati Radio (Kiribati); and Village Knowledge Centres (India); and Video and the Community Dreams Project (Egypt).
