Abstract

This book, with fifteen chapters, covers the public health, technical, socioeconomic, sociocultural and institutional aspects of sanitation in towns and cities of developing countries. The text deals with excreta-related diseases and the use of sanitation to reduce their transmission. Technologies covered include: VIP latrines, pour-flush toilets, septic tanks, settled sewerage and simplified sewerage. There are additional chapters on sludge disposal, pit emptying, and sewage treatment and reuse. Four of the last five chapters of the book deal with more social rather than technical issues and have the following headings: sociocultural aspects; socioeconomic aspects; hygiene education; and institutional aspects. There is also a chapter on technology selection and upgrading. The chapter on institutional aspects, covers effective sanitation programme planning, monitoring and evaluation.
