Abstract

Banfora is a small community in Burkina Faso, with a population of approximately 50,000 inhabitants. The water supply for Banfora is tapped from a pipeline from a dammed reservoir, which supplies a sugar factory. Although there is sufficient rainfall to supply present and future needs, it is irregular and unreliable, requiring storage. Groundwater is plentiful and of good quality. Rural water supplies consist primarily of wells. The largest water user in the area is the sugar factory; which irrigates 3,685 hectares of sugar cane in addition to the water which is used in sugar processing. This extensive water use conflicts with the Banfora Water Supply and rice growers, especially during the dry season. Although water is a top National Priority in Burkina Faso, resulting in the formation of a Ministry of Water, there is no water management plan in existance or foreseen for this area.
