Abstract

This is a practical guide to help to help communities in developing countries to set up and run a library. The first section discusses how to establish a library, in terms of the initial location, acquisition and purchasing of materials and books, fund raising (including book donation schemes), bookkeeping and staff recruitment. The second section deals with library management issues such as: librarian training; community involvement; organizing, storing, classifying and maintaining materials; evaluation and expansion. The manual includes a resource guide to relevant organizations and a bibliography.
